EXCLUSIVE: ITV and Red Production Company have found the two lead actresses for their upcoming comedy series Cabbage and Pat. My sources tell me that Cherie Lunghi (Secret Diary Of A Call Girl) and Barbara Flynn (Cranford) have been cast as the co-leads in the six episode series, with production on Cabbage and Pat currently underway.
Created by Amy Shindler and Beth Chalmers, Cabbage and Pat follows two women, one widowed and one divorced, who together find a new lust for life. The comedy series is being produced by Red Production Company with Richard Webb serving as the producer and Red’s Nicola Shindler serving as the executive producer. The Syndicate helmer Syd Macartney is directing the skein.
Cabbage and Pat is part of ITV’s aggressive push to seriously re-enter the world of original scripted comedy. They started on that track last year after shying away from comedy for the past several years. One of the early attempts to get back into the genre, Great Night Out, was cancelled after one so-so rated season of six episodes. The commercial broadcaster currently has two comedy series on the air: The Job Lot and Vicious. Both have, however, failed to make any significant impact in the ratings, which both now pulling in average audiences of around 2 million viewers, and as such are not expected to return for second runs.
