Following on from picking up four pilots, The CW has renewed bubble shows Nikita and The Carrie Diaries. Nikita will return for a fourth and final season, while The Carrie Diaries will return for a second. I’m waiting for official word from a CW rep but my sources tell me that Nikita‘s order is for 6 episodes, while The Carrie Diaries is for 13.
Despite being written of by various industry analysts, Nikita has been a solid performer for The CW in its Friday night time-slot. The series also has seen significant ratings bumps via SVOD – something which is taken into account for renewals at The CW due to their rich deal with Hulu. With a full fourth season, the series is now close to the 80+ episodes Warner Bros. needs to sell the series in syndication.
The Carrie Diaries is a prequel to HBO’s Sex And The City and is based on the novel of the same name. The series follows Carrie in 1980′s Manhattan as she is still in high school. The cast includes AnnaSophia Robb, Freema Agyeman, Austin Butler, Brendan Dooling, Matt Letscher, Ellen Wong, Stefania Owen and Katie Findlay. Fake Empire is producing in association with Warner Bros. Television, with Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, Len Goldstein, Candace Bushnell and writer Amy Harris serving as executive producers. Despite mediocre ratings, the series, like Nikita, has seen significant views via SVOD and an impending sale of the series to the key UK market is what sealed the renewal of The Carrie Diaries.
