PBS America has closed a deal to acquire Frontline’s fast turnaround documentary about America’s battle against terrorism, tracing events from 9/11 to the recent bombings in Boston, Massachusetts. The documentary, titled Boston Bombing: Top Secret America, aired on PBS in the United States on April 30th and will premiere in the UK on PBS America on Thursday May 30th at 9pm.
In this special documentary, Frontline collaborates with Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Dana Priest to examine the efforts of the Federal government since 9/11 to improve information sharing among federal agencies (such as the FBI and CIA) tasked with keeping Americans safe and investigates the secret history of the 12-year battle against terrorism. This investigation delves deep into a top-secret world that, Priest says, “has become so large, so unwieldy and so secretive that no one knows how much money it costs, how many people it employs, how many programmes exist within it or exactly how many agencies do the same work.”
Priest is a reporter for The Washington Post and has written extensively on what she has dubbed Top Secret America. Priest and William Arkin published a number of articles on the subject, with assistance from numerous other journalists, beginning in July 2010, which examined not only the expansion of federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies, but a rising trend of outsourcing work vital to national security to private companies and contractors. Priest and Arkin’s expose was also the subject of a previous Frontline documentary titled Top Secret America in September 2011. This new documentary, which aired on PBS on April 30th under the title Top Secret America: 9/11 To The Boston Bombings, is a follow up to that entry.
