BBC Three has closed a deal with BBC Worldwide to acquire the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to BBC America’s recently renewed drama series Orphan Black. The deal covers only the 10 episode first season of the series.
Created by Graeme Manson (Flashpoint) and John Fawcett (Spartacus), Orphan Black follows outsider, orphan and street-wise chameleon Sarah. After witnessing a woman’s suicide, Sarah assumes the strangers identity – who happens to look just like her. Expecting to solve all her problems by cleaning out the dead woman’s savings, Sarah is instead thrust headlong into a kaleidoscopic mystery as she realizes the dizzying truth: that she and the dead woman are clones. As Sarah searches for answers, she discovers the chilling fact that there are more people like her out there: genetically identical individuals who were planted in unsuspecting birth parents and nurtured in completely different circumstances. With no idea who created the clones, she’ll need to discover the reason in a hurry as an assassin is killing them one by one. The series is produced by Temple Street Productions in association with BBC America and Space and stars Tatiana Maslany, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Dylan Bruce, Jordan Gavaris, Kevin Hanchard, Michael Mando, Elizabeth Saunders and Ron Lea.
Speaking of the deal with BBC Three, Perry Simon, General Manager of BBC America, said: “Orphan Black has met with terrific excitement in the US from critics, the audience and across social media. Graeme and John have created an intricate web that keeps you guessing at every turn and at the heart of the action Tatiana Maslany’s performance is simply dazzling. We couldn’t be more pleased that UK viewers are getting the
chance to join in the fun.”
While Sue Deeks, the BBC’s Head of Programme Acquisition, added: “Orphan Black is an intriguing roller-coaster ride of a thriller with a complex and engaging plot and a virtuoso performance by Tatiana Maslany – we are delighted that it is going to be part of BBC Three’s upcoming schedule.”
