EXCLUSIVE: I’ve learned that the BBC is developing a new hour-long dramedy series from Shelagh Stephenson set in a dating agency titled Seeks Similar. Stephenson is an established writer who was written for numerous theatre productions. Her TV writing credits include Casualty, Downton Abbey and the BBC Two docudrama Shirley. One source tells me that this project is in development for BBC Three, but I’ve been unable to confirm that.
Penned by Stephenson, Seeks Similar has been described as a work place comedy. The series is set in a dating agency which caters to a exclusive clientele and follows the trials and tribulations of the agency’s staff as they try to find the perfect match for their clients. I understand that a series of six scripts have been commissioned and, as the BBC frequently does, will base the decision on whether or not to pull the trigger on a series order on the strength of these scripts rather than piloting the dramedy. Independent Production company Big Fish Film & Television is producing the project, with Kevin Jackson serving as the executive producer.
