EXCLUSIVE: I’ve learned that executives at ITV have given the green-light to a new contemporary drama series titled Love and Marriage. Produced by Tiger Aspect Productions – the Endemol owned production company behind Mount Pleasant, Ripper Street as well as upcoming series The Spa and Peaky Blinders – Love and Marriage has been described by one of my sources as a “drama about friends and family.”
Exact plot details are being kept under wraps, but I’m hearing rumblings that the series is set in or near Coventry and follows the daily lives of a couple who have started to drift apart and their friends and family. The series has been given a six episode order and I’m told that it was commissioned by ITV’s departing drama executives Laura Mackie and Sally Haynes back in October 2012, making it one of the last dramas commissioned by the pair. I hear that the duo didn’t pilot the project and picked it up based on the strength of the scripts written by Stewart Harcourt – whose previous credits include Jericho for ITV and Treasure Island for Sky1. I’m told it was at that stage that Debbie Isitt (Nativity) was attached to direct to the six episode series, shortly before casting got underway. The series will star Alison Steadman (Gavin & Stacey), Graeme Hawley (Coronation Street), Celia Imrie (Bridget Jones’s Diary) and Larry Lamb (EastEnders). I’m also being told that Rebecca De Souza (Prisoners’ Wives) and Lawrence Till (Shameless) are producing, with Tiger Aspect’s Will Gould serving as executive producer.
