Cinemax has handed a second season renewal to its freshman drama series Banshee. The series, which is currently airing its 10 episode first season on the premium cable network, will return for a ten episode second season in 2014.
Created by Jonathan Tropper & David Schickler and executive produced by True Blood showrunner Alan Ball, Banshee follows Lucas Hood, an ex-con and master thief who assumes the identity of the sheriff of Banshee, Pa., where he continues his criminal activities, even as he’s hunted by the shadowy gangsters he betrayed years earlier. The drama series stars Antony Starr (Rush), Ivana Milicevic (Charlie’s Angels), Ulrich Thomsen (The Celebration), Frankie Faison (The Good Wife), Rus Blackwell (Burn Notice), Ryann Shane (Blue Bloods), Ben Cross (Star Trek), Demetrius Grosse (Justified), Trieste Kelly Dunn (Brothers and Sisters), Matt Servitto (The Sopranos), Lili Simmons (Fat Kid Rules the World), Hoon Lee (Premium Rush) and Daniel Ross Owens (Prison Break).
Banshee has been a strong performer for Cinemax with the premiere episode bringing in 0.48 million viewers in its original airing. That is in line with the network’s action series Strike Back and almost double the initial ratings for the premiere episode of Hunted which pulled 0.25 million viewers. Given that, the series had been considered a lock for a second season renewal. The series joins action Strike Back – which just recently entered production on its new season on South Africa with new cast member Robson Green – which was also recently renewed by the network. Meanwhile, Cinemax is still in talks with Kudos and Frank Spotnitz about a new incarnation of spy drama Hunted.
