BBC America has finalised casting for its upcoming sc-fi series Orphan Black. Tatiana Maslany (Picture Day) has been cast in the lead role of Sarah, an outsider and orphan whose life changes dramatically after witnessing the suicide of a woman who looks just like her. Other main cast members include Maria Doyle Kennedy (The Tudors), Dylan Bruce (The Bay), Jordan Gavaris (Degrassi), Kevin Hanchard (The Listener), Michael Mando (Territories), Elizabeth Saunders (Saving Hope), and Ron Lea (Saving Hope).
Created by Graeme Manson (Flashpoint) and John Fawcett (Spartacus), Orphan Black follows outsider, orphan and street-wise chameleon Sarah. After witnessing a woman’s suicide, Sarah assumes the strangers identity – who happens to look just like her. Expecting to solve all her problems by cleaning out the dead woman’s savings, Sarah is instead thrust headlong into a kaleidoscopic mystery as she realizes the dizzying truth: that she and the dead woman are clones. As Sarah searches for answers, she discovers the chilling fact that there are more people like her out there: genetically identical individuals who were planted in unsuspecting birth parents and nurtured in completely different circumstances. With no idea who created the clones, she’ll need to discover the reason in a hurry as an assassin is killing them one by one. Temple Street Productions is producing, Ivan Schneeberg and David Fortier are serving as executive producers, with Manson also serving as writer and Fawcett as director. Production on the series is currently underway in Toronto and Ontario and is set to last until February 2013.
“We’re very excited to be working with Graeme and John on bringing Orphan Black to the screen”, said David Fortier, Executive Producer and Co-President of Temple Street Productions. “It’s become a passion project that just happens to touch upon the very timely topic of self-identity. When we began working on this series, we were driven by the quality of the writing and the scope of the themes.”
“Orphan Black is a breakthrough show, creatively and technologically. We’re thrilled with the talented cast Temple Street Productions has assembled led by extraordinary young actress Tatiana Maslany. We can’t wait to launch this edge-of-your-seat thrill ride series,” said Perry Simon, General Manager of BBC America.
