British actor Toby Stephens (Die Another Day) has been cast in the lead role of Starz’s upcoming pirate drama series Black Sails. Stephens has been cast as Captain Flint, the most brilliant and feared captain of all in the Golden Age of pirates and the commander of the pirate ship Walrus.
Set 20 years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel Treasure Island, Black Sails was created by Jon Steinberg and tells the story of of Captain Flint and his men. Threatened with extinction on all sides, Flint and his crew fight for the survival of New Providence Island, the most notorious criminal haven of its day – a debauched paradise teeming with pirates, prostitutes, thieves and fortune seekers, a place defined by both its enlightened ideals and its stunning brutality. Flint adds a young stranger to his crew who goes by the name John Silver and sets forth on a plan that could alter the course of history forever. The show’s eight episode first season, which is being produced by Michael Bay through his production company Platinum Dunes, is slated to commence production at Cape Town Studios in Cape Town, South Africa later this year.
