EXCLUSIVE: I have just learned that Channel 4 has closed a deal to acquire the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to MTV’s adaptation of The Inbetweeners for its E4 channel. I hear that the series will air on E4 later this year and my sources are also telling me that, similarly to how Showtime’s adaptation of Shameless was titled Shameless US to differentiate it from the original, the series will appear on E4’s schedule as The Inbetweeners US.
Based on Channel 4’s original series of the same name, The Inbetweeners was developed for US television by Brad Copeland and follows a group of friends who are “the inbetweeners” – not nerds or jocks, but kids who are smack in the middle of the high school social ladder. This group of teenagers are navigating high school and charging into adulthood the way everyone does by taking one step forward and three steps back. Whether humiliating themselves in an effort to impress the girl of their dreams, or mercilessly mocking their friend for driving a bright yellow clunker with a cassette player and one blue door, they are, whether they like it or not, the inbetweeners. The comedy series stars Joey Pollari as Will McKenzie, Bubba Lewis as Simon Cooper, Zack Pearlman as Jay Cartwright, Mark L. Young as Neil Sutherland and Alex Frnka as Carly D’Amato.
