BBC One Renews 'Citizen Khan' For Second Season – TVWise

BBC One has renewed their comedy series Citizen Khan for a second season of 7 episodes, which is set to air in 2013.
Created by Adil Ray, Citizen Khan is set in the capital of British Pakistan – Sparkhill, Birmingham. It follows the trials and tribulations of self-appointed Muslim community leader Mr Khan and his long suffering family. Khan is a larger than life character, a small man with big dreams and strident opinions. Things would be so much easier if everyone just listened to him and followed his lead, but his obsessively house-proud wife and two feisty daughters have other ideas. The comedy series is produced by BBC In-house Comedy and stars Adil Ray as Mr Khan, Shobu Kapoor as Mrs Khan, Maya Sondhi as Shazia Khan and Bhavna Limbachia as Alia Khan.
The renewal of Citzen Khan comes after the series launched in August with 3.7 million viewers and a 21% share. The series has, based on consolidated viewing figures for the first four episodes, consistently won its time slot every week, with the series averaging 3.0 million viewers and an 18% share.
Speaking of the renewal of Citizen Khan, Danny Cohen, Controller of BBC One, said: “BBC One has a long tradition of laugh-out-loud family comedy for all generations. Citizen Khan has delivered this whilst bringing new comic talent and a fresh flavour to the channel. I can’t wait for the second series.”
Mark Freeland, Head of BBC In House Comedy added: “With a sitcom, to grab attention all you can ask is laugh out loud funny distinctiveness, authenticity and great characters. I think we’ve certainly grabbed people’s attention.”
While series star and creator Adil Ray commented: “I am thrilled. This is testament to the hard work of the cast, my co-writers and the entire crew. I have been touched to hear from families nationwide who have already taken this cuddly bearded Pakistani Muslim from Birmingham into their hearts and living rooms. Above all, I thank Community Leaders who continue to spring up everywhere who provide the inspiration.”
