I had heard rumblings of this over the past few months, but it is now official. In a deal similar to those struck for The Walking Dead and Dexter, Fox International Channels has picked up the exclusive first window pay-TV rights to the BBC Worldwide/Starz series Da Vinci’s Demons. The deal that Fox International Channels (FIC) has struck with BBC Worldwide will see the show’s eight episode first season air on FX UK and FIC’s 200 pay-TV entertainment channels to audiences in 120 countries across EMEA in early 2013.
Created by David S. Goyer, Da Vinci’s Demons is a historical fantasy seres which tells the ‘untold’ story of the world’s greatest genius during his turbulent youth in Renaissance Florence. Brilliant and passionate, the twenty five-year old da Vinci is an artist, inventor, swordsman, lover, dreamer and idealist. As a free thinker, with intellect and talents that are almost superhuman, he struggles to live within the confines of his own reality and time. He begins to not only see the future, but invent it. The drama series stars Tom Riley (Monroe) as a Leonardo Da Vinci; Laura Haddock (Upstairs Downstairs) as Lucrezia Donati, the mistress of Lorenzo Medici and lover of Leonardo Da Vinci; Lara Pulver (Spooks/MI5) as Clarice Orsini, the wife of Lorenzo Medici; and Andrew Brooke (PhoneShop) as Grunwald. Production is currently underway on the show’s eight episode first season in Wales. BBC Worldwide retains all rights outside the US, Canada and Fox International Channels territories.
Speaking of the global deal to pick up Da Vinci’s Demons, Sharon Tal Yguado, Senior Vice-President of Scripted Programming at Fox International Channels, said: “Following the incredible success we’ve had with The Walking Dead we were looking for a tentpole series that would be different in tone and story but equally powerful with audiences worldwide. Goyer’s vision of one of history’s most enigmatic characters knocked us off our feet. We are convinced Da Vinci’s Demons is a real game changer in the world of period dramas.”
Jason Simms, Senior Vice-President of Global Acquisitions for Fox International Channels, added: “FIC has a long and successful track record in spearheading multi-territory and global programming initiatives, from Dexter to The Walking Dead to Touch. We are delighted to partner with BBC Worldwide on this prestigious, ambitious and exciting new series”.
While Steve Macallister, President & Managing Director of Sales & Distribution for BBC Worldwide, commented: “This is a bold and ambitious show from Starz and Jane Tranter’s team which will sit really well with the range of great dramas currently available on FIC’s channels. This production is particularly unique and should generate huge amounts of audience buzz. We’re thrilled to be taking Da Vinci right across the globe, which seems very appropriate for arguably the world’s most renowned polymath.”
