BBC two has ordered a new three part drama serial titled The Politician’s Husband. The one-off drama was created by Paula Milne (White Heat) and is being produced for BBC Two by Daybreak Pictures. Production is currently underway on The Politican’s Husband in London.
The Politician’s Husband, a book-end to the mid 1990’s serial The Politician’s Wife (also written by Paula Milne), follows the delicate balance in a political marriage and the ensuing consequences when the wife becomes more successful than her husband. Senior Cabinet Minister, Aiden Hoynes, is happily married to Freya, a junior minister. When we meet Aiden he is a rising star in Westminster. He went into Parliament driven by idealism, but after his son Noah was diagnosed with Aspergers he allowed himself to be sucked into the power games of Westminster, which provided him with a place to hide. Freya Gardner, although equally able, has put the brakes on her own political career in order to provide stability for the family. But even as a Junior Minister, most recognize she is a political star in the making.
The drama series stars David Tennant (Doctor Who) as Senior Cabinet Minister Aiden Hoynes, Emily Watson (War Horse) as Freya Hoynes and Ed Stoppard (Upstairs Downstairs) as Bruce Babbish. Alos starring in The Politician’s Husband is Jack Shepherd (The Nativity) as Joe, Aiden’s Father; Roger Allam (The Thick of It) as Chief Whip Marcus Fitzwallace and Oscar Kennedy (Hunted) as the Hoynes’ son Noah. The three part drama is being directed by Simon Cellan Jones, with Lucy Richer and David Aukin serving as execuitve producers.
