PBS UK has announced that Jesse Owens, the latest documentary in their ‘American Experience’ series, will premiere on the channel (Sky 166/Virgin Media 243) on Wednesday June 6th at 10:15pm.

Jesse Owens tells the story of the US Olympic athlete who competed in the 1936 games in Berlin, Germany. At high school and university, Jesse shone as an athlete, setting several world records. Away from the track, though, he was still limited by segregation and could not even live on the college campus. In Berlin, the 22-year-old Owens won gold in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay and long jump, in which he set an Olympic record that lasted for 24 years. Also, contrary to popular belief, it was not Adolf Hitler who snubbed Jesse Owens by refusing to congratulate him on his successes, it was in fact US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. In the years after the ’36 games, Owens fell into bankruptcy and it was not until 1955 that Owens would get any recognition for his Olympic achievements.
