Both Stella and The Cafe will be returning to Sky1. The broadcaster has announced that they have commissioned a second season of both series ordering a further 10 episodes of Stella and 8 episodes for The Cafe.
Stella stars Ruth Jones as the titular character and revolves around her often troubled life in Pontyberry, South Wales. The show’s first season is currently airing on Sky, and is scheduled to complete its run in March. Speaking of the second season pickup of Stella, Lucy Lumsden, Head of Comedy for Sky commented: “All hail Ruth Jones. Stella was our first and biggest original comedy commission and we are thrilled that our customers love it as much as we do. Bring on the second series.”
The Cafe stars Ralf Little, June Watson, Ellie Haddington and Michelle Terry and is set in and around a café in Weston-Super-Mare which acts as the social hub of the seafront town. The show completed its first season on Sky1 in November 2011. Speaking of the second season pickup, Lucy Lumsden, Head of Comedy for Sky said, “Enchanting and unashamedly romantic, we are delighted to be bringing back The Cafe for another series on Sky1.”
The re-commissioning of these two orginal British series underlines Sky’s commitment to home grown programming. The sattelite broadcaster is expected to invest up to £600 million a year in British programming by the end of 2014.
