USA Network Bringing Back 'Psych' For Two-Hour TV Movie – TVWise

Psych is the latest TV property getting the revival treatment. USA Network has announced that they are bringing back the show for a two-hour TV movie, which will air on the NBCU owned and operated network this coming December.
Lead actors James Roday and Dulé Hill are on-board to reprise their roles as Shawn and Gus, respectively. Other returning cast members include Timothy Omundson as Lassiter, Maggie Lawson as Juliet, Corbin Bernsen as Henry and Kirsten Nelson as Chief Vick.
After producing some eight season (tying Monk as USA Network’s longest running original series), Psych came to and end on USA back in 2014. The series, created by Steve Franks, followed Shawn Spencer and his best friend Gus as they perform their duties as consultants for the Santa Barbara Police Department. The only hitch is that almost everyone believes that Shawn is a psychic detective, when in truth he is not and often requires the help of Henry and Gus to close the cases he is assigned.
Psych: The Movie picks up three years after the series finale and sees the friends come together during the holidays after a mystery assailant targets one of their own. Series creator Steve Franks and star James Roday penned the script for the two-hour holiday movie, which is being produced by Universal Cable Productions in association with Tagline Pictures. The executive producers are Steve Franks, James Roday, Dulé Hil, Chris Henze and Kelly Kulchak. Franks will also direct. Production is set to commence on May 24th.
Ever since Psych wrapped its run there has been talk, off and on, about doing a movie. This is not the first time USA has explored bringing back one of their fan favourite shows for a TV movie. Back in 2013 USA commissioned a script for a Monk follow up TV movie, but ultimately passed on the project after the financing could not be worked out. A deal with Universal Cable Productions and expected strong international sales for Psych: The Movie ensured that that was not an issue in this case.
At present there is no UK broadcaster attached to Psych: The Movie, but TVWise understands that NBCUniversal International Distribution will be pitching the one-off to buyers at the upcoming LA Screenings. Universal Channel is considered a likely bidder at this stage, given that they held first window rights to Psych during its original run, but it is also expected to be a potential target for ITV.
