FOX UK Lands Cop Shooting Event Series ‘Shots Fired’

EXCLUSIVE: FOX UK is adding a topical event series to their line-up.

The Fox Networks Group backed channel has secured the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to Shots Fired, the cop shooting event series starring Sanaa Lathan (Boss) and Stephan James (Selma), after striking a deal with sister company Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution, TVWise can reveal.

Shots Fired depicts the dangerous aftermath of a police shooting when an African-American cop kills a white teen in Tennessee. Lathan plays an expert investigator who digs into the cases, alongside special prosecutor Preston Terry, played by Preston James. The pair are sent to the town by the Department of Justice and must navigate the media attention, public debate and the social unrest that comes with such volatile cases, as they seek justice before the divided town erupts.

Originally ordered to series by Fox state-side in December 2015 following a rash of real-life incidents in which various local police forces in the United States shot unarmed African Americans, Shots Fired is only expected to produce a single ten episode season. It is produced by 20th Century Fox Television in association with Imagine Television and Undisputed Cinema and, in addition to Lathan and James, also stars Mack Wilds, Helen Hunt, Richard Dreyfuss and Stephen Moyer. Series co-creators Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood serve as executive producers alongside Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo.

“Shots Fired is a thrilling examination of police violence and racial injustice in America”, said Toby Etheridge, Head of Programming for Fox Networks Group UK. “Not just your average police procedural, Shots Fired asks thought-provoking questions confronting difficult social issues head on, whilst unravelling a conspiracy that will keep you enthralled and guessing until the final episode. Featuring an incredible A-list ensemble cast, Shots Fired is a premium must-see drama, only on FOX.”

This caps off a particularly aggressive shopping spree for FOX UK. The channel, which in years past has had a more subdued profile, has been upping their game in recent months by competing for (and landing) the UK rights to several high profile broadcast shows, most notably 24: Legacy and the Prison Break revival, even as more prominent UK buyers were circling. Shots Fired, which is expected to launch on FOX UK in June, joins a slate of exclusive acquisitions at FOX UK that also includes The Walking Dead, LegionBasketsNCISBull and American Dad.
