Hulu has found their George Tenet.
The streaming service has set Alec Baldwin (30 Rock, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) as the controversial CIA Director in their upcoming ten episode 9/11 event series The Looming Tower, TVWise has learned. As DCI, Tenet is Richard Clarke’s partner in fighting Al-Qaeda, though he may know more than he is letting on.
Baldwin is the latest addition to a cast that also includes Jeff Daniels as John O’Neill, Tahar Rahim as Ali Soufan, Peter Sarsgaard as Martin Schmidt, Michael Stuhlbarg as Richard Clarke, Bill Camp as Robert Chesney, Virginia Kull as Kathy Shaughnessy, Louis Cancelmi as Vince Stuart, Ella Rae Peck as Heather, Sullivan Jones as Floyd Bennet and Wrenn Schmidt as Diane Priest.
Based on Lawrence Wright’s book of the same name, The Looming Tower examines the chain of events that led to the September 11th terrorist attacks. Of particular focus is the rising threat of Bin Laden and the Al-Qaeda network throughout the 1990s and how dysfunction at the heart of government, the FBI and CIA prevented U.S. authorities from identifying and disrupting the attack. Lawrence Wright won a Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction for his work on the book.
The project hails from Legendary Television and was written by Oscar nominee Dan Futterman (Capote, Judging Amy) and Alex Gibney (The New Yorker Presents). Futterman, Gibney and original author Lawrence Wright will serve as the executive producers. Legendary Television Distribution is handling global sales. Production on the series began today in New York, with Hulu eyeing a late 2017 premiere.
While The Looming Tower does not yet have a UK broadaster, it looks set to become a hot title in the coming weeks/months; with the BBC, Channel 5 and FOX UK being among the channels that expressed some preliminary interest.
