Viceland UK Acquires FX’s Animated Spy Comedy ‘Archer’

Viceland UK is adding to their comedy line-up.

The Vice backed channel has struck a deal with international distributor Endemol Shine International to acquire FX’s animated spy comedy Archer, TVWise has confirmed.

The deal between the two companies gives Viceland exclusive UK TV rights to the show’s first five seasons. The first four seasons of the show previously aired on Channel 5’s digi-net 5Star (then stylised as 5*), before ultimately being dropped due to low ratings.

While the fifth through seventh seasons of the show have never gotten a linear broadcast on UK television, they have been available to stream on Netflix UK. TVWise understands that the deal between Viceland and Endemol Shine has no impact on the prior agreement with the streaming service, who will continue to stream all seven seasons of the show. Netflix UK is also expected to announced a premiere date for season eight in the next few weeks.

This marks the second major U.S. scripted acquisition for Viceland UK. The channel previously struck a deal with Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution for the linear rights to fellow FX comedy series It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, which, like Archer, initially airs in the UK on Netflix. Archer is set to premiere on Viceland UK on Monday May 1st and will air weekdays in the 11pm time-slot.

So this only applies to the prior seasons! Oh good, other articles didn’t say that. We don’t even have NOW TV in Ireland.

Is Channel 4 going to air Fargo season 3, which just started in America? Do they even own the rights?

    • C4 picked up the rights several months ago, yes, but they haven’t got it on the schedule and I’m told it’s not likely to air before the summer.
