That didn’t take long. Less than 24 hours after TVWise broke the news that Sky was in talk with CBS Studios International to acquire MacGyver, the two companies today announced that they have closed a deal giving Sky1 the exclusive first window UK broadcast rights to the show.
Described as a reimagining of the television series of the same name, MacGyver follows a 20-something MacGyver as he creates a clandestine organization where he uses his knack for solving problems in unconventional ways to help prevent disasters from happening. The drama series is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Lionsgate and stars Lucas Till, George Eads, Sandrine Holt, Justin Hires and Tristin Mays.
This licensing deal further extends the existing relationship between Sky and CBS Studios International. The two companies have previously pacted together to bring such shows as NCIS: Los Angeles, Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods to the UK. In addition to MacGyver, this deal also give Sky the exclusive rights to the newest season of America’s Next Top Model, which will air on Sky Living.
“We’re delighted that Sky Living audiences will be the first in the U.K. to see the latest instalment of the hugely popular ANTM”, said Adam MacDonald, Director of Sky1 and Sky Living. “And Sky1 audiences love an explosive action-adventure, making MacGyver the perfect addition to our February line-up.”
“MacGyver’s action-adventure storylines and ANTM’s iconic format are prime examples of CBS’ successful programming that appeals to a global audience”, added Stephen Tague, Senior Vice-President, Europe, CBS Studios International. “We look forward to working with Sky, one of our most important U.K. partners, to make these new series a success for the territory.”
