BBC One’s hit military drama Our Girl has been renewed for a third season, with Michelle Keegan set to return as lead character Georgie Lane, TVWise has learned. The show’s third season is expected to air in 2017.
Our Girl began its life as a one-off drama starring Lacey Turner as Molly Dawes, who was completing her training with the Royal Army Medical Corps and heading off on her first-ever deployment as a serving medic in Afghanistan. Turner reprised the role for the five episode first season, but exited when the show was picked up for season two due to conflicts with her role on EastEnders.
It was at that point that Michelle Keegan was tapped to replace Turner as the lead actress in the show, but rather than recasting the Molly Dawes character they created an entirely new role, namely that of Georgie Lane. A number of original cast members including Ben Aldridge and Sean Ward reprised their roles for season two.
“I’m so happy that we’ll be back for another series as I think there’s definitely more stories to tell with Georgie”, Michelle Keegan said in a statement. “The reaction to the show has been overwhelming and I’m really thankful to everyone who’s watched and supported it. It was an amazing experience filming with such an incredible group of people and I can’t wait to do it all over again”
Our Girl was created by Tony Grounds and is produced for BBC One by the corporations production division BBC Studios. The show’s third season was commissioned by the BBC’s Director of Content Charlotte Moore and Acting Controller of Drama Commissioning Lucy Richer. The executive producers are Caroline Skinner and Tony Grounds.
