Joy Of Techs, a half-hour tech format fronted by real-life friends Marcus Brigstocke and Alexis Conran, has been been picked up to series by UKTV’s Dave channel with a ten episode order, TVWise has learned. The series is set to premiere in 2017.
The series follows technophobe Brigstocke and the gadget obsessive Conran as they travel across the UK and put the world’s top gadgets to the test. Alexis is a technophile who has everything, while Marcus has his old school kit. Alexis tries to convince Marcus technology is the way forward while Marcus is sure the old way is best and will do everything in his might to prove he’s right.
“Even if we needed half the so called ‘life-hack’ crap they produce – most of it is so complicated it rarely works. You’re left with some gormless consumption slave holding a widget aloft trying to find a signal. Nonsense! I’ll tell you a good bit of tech – the zip. That works. The match. Brilliant”, said Brigstocke. “Now poor Alex is obsessed with this stuff and in the Joy of Techs I will take great pleasure in demonstrating to him that it’s a waste of time and money. It’s going to be fun. I will be setting the timer on my VHS recorder for this series… If I can find the remote control thing.”
Joys Of Techs hails from independent production company Blink Films and was commissioned by UKTV;s Director of Commissioning Richard Watsham and Dave’s General Manager Steve North. Jack Chesire is the series producer and will also direct. UKTV’s Commissioning Editor Iain Coyle serves as the executive producer alongside Blink Films’ Dan Chambers.
“We’re delighted to welcome back Marcus Brigstocke to Dave. His hugely original and entertaining take on the world of gadgetry will strike a chord with anyone who has ever struggled to grasp the techie zeitgeist”, Steve North, General Manager of Dave, said in a statement. “Combined with Alexis’ uber competitive nature to try and convince Marcus – and all of us – that technology can triumph.”
The series order for Joys Of Techs comes as UKTV is continuing with their aggressive push into originals as part of their growth strategy. Said strategy, which also saw the channel recently make a move into live sport, has been a successful one with Dave retaining its place as the number one non-PSB channel in the UK and growing by 1% year-on-year in the recently released 2015 results. Other recent original commissions for Dave include Dara O Briain’s Go 8 Bit, Taskmaster, Celebrity Storage Hunters UK, Red Dwarf XI and Zapped!
