Starz has renewed their limited series The Girlfriend Experience, from noted director Steven Soderbergh, for a fourteen episode second season. The announcement was made today by Starz President & CEO Chris Albrecht during the network’s panel at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour.
Based on the feature film of the same name, The Girlfriend Experience explores the relationships of the most exclusive courtesans who provide their clients with far more than just sex. The cast for season one included Riley Keough, Paul Sparks, Mary Lynn Rajskub and Kate Lyn Sheil. The show’s second season will feature an entirely new cast and storyline.
Lodge Kerrigan and Amy Seimetz will serve as showrunners, writers and directors for the show;s 14 episode second season. Also returning as executive producers are Steven Soderbergh, Philip Fleishman and Jeff Cuban. Andrew Fierberg and Adele Romanski will also executive produce. Starz Worldwide Distribution will handle global sales for the show’s second season.
“The first season of ‘The Girlfriend Experience’ allowed us to accommodate all viewing appetites with the traditional weekly episodic premiere schedule as well as a binging option for the entire 13-episodes,” said Carmi Zlotnik, Starz’s Managing Director. “We’re excited to offer STARZ subscribers a second season that will explore new GFEs, clients and relationships as we take viewers back into this world that questions the price of intimacy and its emotional consequences.”
The second season pick-up for The Girlfriend Experience comes mere weeks after Starz confirmed that their flagship series, pirate drama Black Sails, would be coming to an end after four seasons – making it one of their longest running originals, tied with Spartacus. Amazon Prime Video holds UK rights to The Girlfriend Experience after recently striking a deal with Starz Digital.
