The Originals has found a new UK home.
Mere months after TVWise revealed that Syfy UK had dropped the Vampire Diaries spin-off, Netflix UK has swooped in a secured the UK rights to the series in a deal with international distributor Warner Bros. International Television Distribution. The show’s first three seasons are now available to stream for Netflix UK subscribers.
A spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, The Originals revolves around the Original family of vampires, as Klaus returns to the supernatural melting pot that is the French Quarter of New Orleans and is reunited with his diabolical former protégé Marcel. The drama series is produced by Warner Bros. Television, CBS Television Studios and Alloy Entertainment and stars Joseph Morgan, Daniel Gillies, Phoebe Tonkin, Charles Michael Davis, Leah Pipes and Danielle Campbell. The CW recently renewed The Originals for a fourth season.
In the years since the streaming service launched here in the UK, Netflix has become a formidable threat to traditional broadcasters. They started by pursuing the exclusive rights to series that were dropped or under-valued by their existing UK homes – such as Once Upon A Time and Breaking Bad – before competing for new shows out of the LA Screenings. As one senior buyer at a rival broadcaster recently put it, Netflix UK issued a “formal declaration of war” last month by doing a massive global deal for Star Trek: Discovery, even as Sky was circling.
The Originals now joins a slate of exclusive series at Netflix UK that includes Better Call Saul, House Of Cards, Scream, Pretty Little Liars, Orange Is The New Black, Once Upon A Time, Marco Polo, Orphan Black, Star Trek: Discovery, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, iZombie, Reign, Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Power. TVWise also understands that the UK arm of the streaming service is in talks with eOne to pick up the UK rights to ABC’s Kiefer Sutherland drama Designated Survivor.
