Netflix has come on-board BBC America’s original series Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, starring Samuel Barnett (Penny Dreadful) and Elijah Wood (The Lord Of The Rings), TVWise has learned.
Under their deal, the streaming giant will now co-produce and serve as the exclusive broadcaster of the eight episode comedic thriller series in more than 100 international territories, including the UK.
Based on Douglas Adams’ novels, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency follows the bizarre adventures of eccentric “holistic” detective Dirk Gently (Barnett) and his reluctant assistant Todd (Wood). This season, Dirk and Todd wend their way through one big, seemingly insane mystery, crossing unlikely paths with a bevy of wild and sometimes dangerous characters, each episode landing them a few random steps closer to uncovering the truth. The series will premiere in the U.S. in October, followed by a global rollout on Netflix in December.
In addition to Samuel Barnett and Elijah Wood, the large cast also includes Hannah Marks (Awkward, The Real O’Neals), Jade Eshete (Shades Of Blue, Deadbeat), Mpho Koaho (Falling Skies, Dark Matter), Fiona Dourif (Manhattan, When We Rise), Michael Eklund (Continuum, Wynonna Earp), Miguel Sandoval (Entourage, Bad Judge), Dustin Milligan (X Company, Schitt’s Creek), Aaron Douglas (Battlestar Galactica, The X-Files), Neil Brown Jr (Suits, Insecure) and Richard Schiff (Murder In The First, Ballers).
This marks the second major Dirk Gently adaptation in the past few years, following BBC Four’s short-lived series, which was fronted by Episodes star Stephen Mangan. BBC America’s series hails from Max Landis, who penned the scripts, and is set up at AMC Studios. The executive producers are Max Landis, Robert Cooper, Ted Adams, David Ozer, David Alpert, Rick Jacobs, Zainir Aminullah and Arvind Ethan David. Oscar-winning helmer Dean Parisot directed the first two episodes.
