Ever since ABC parent Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012 there has been talk, off and on, about a potential live-action Star Wars series coming to the network.
At the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour, new network topper Channing Dungey confirmed that, while there is not a Star Wars project in active development, the ambition to get such a series on ABC is still very much there.
“As a fan, I would absolutely love to say yes” to a Star Wars series, Dungey told the assembled reporters. “We have had conversations with [Lucasfilm[ and we will contintue to have conversations with them. It would be wonderful to extend that brand to our programming.
Famously, George Lucas himself developed a live-action Star Wars TV series in 2005, several years before Lucasfilm was acquired by Disney. That series, tentatively titled Star Wars: Underworld, was eventually scuppered in 2010 due to budgetary restriction, though there was talk of Netflix picking it up again earlier this year. At the time reps for ABC/Disney, Netflix and Lucasfilm denied the move.
