Netflix UK has secured exclusive streaming rights to FX’s hit limited series American Crime Story, TVWise has learned. The show’s first season will launch on the streaming service in 2017, with subsequent seasons being added following their respective broadcast windows.
American Crime Story, which initially airs in the UK on BBC Two, hails from Ryan Murphy & 20th Century Fox Television and dramatises a new true-crime story every season. The first season, known as The People Vs. O.J. Simpson, explored the OJ Simpson murder trial and featured an all-star cast including Cuba Gooding Jr, David Schwimmer, Nathan Lane and Courtney B. Vance.
Netflix UK has secured the streaming rights as part of a wider global deal between Netflix and international distributor Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution – the first such global licensing deal between the two companies. Under said pact, American Crime Story will be available to stream exclusively on Netflix in all territories where the streaming service has a presence, except Canada.
“We’re excited to evolve our relationship with Fox and to bring their lauded content to our members around the world,” said Sean Carey, Netflix’s Vice President of Global Television. “Given the popularity of the first season of American Crime Story, we are thrilled to offer this acclaimed drama series to our members.”
“We’re extremely pleased to continue our relationship with Netflix on this groundbreaking deal”, added Gina Brogi, Executive Vice-President of Worldwide Pay TV & SVOD for Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution. “We are very proud of the first installment of this franchise, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, which has received extraordinary critical acclaim and perfectly captured the cultural Zeitgeist.”
