ITV has given the green-light to Muncie, a three-part true-crime drama about Scottish killer Peter Manuel which hails from Line of Duty producer World Productions, TVWise has learned. Douglas Henshall (Shetland) is attached to star.
Muncie tells the true story of William Muncie’s long quest to bring Peter Manuel to justice, beginning in 1946 when he arrested Manuel for “housebreaking” and a string of sexual assaults. Released from prison nine years later, Manuel embarked on a two-year killing spree and made Muncie his Number One target audience, sending him birthday cards and leaving tantalising clues. While the local police were stymied, Muncie doggedly refused to give up until Manuel was brought to justice.
Douglas Henshall will lead the cast as Lanarkshire detective William Muncie; while Line Of Duty’s Martin Compston has been cast as Peter Manuel. Other cast members include Brian McCardie (Outlander) as Samuel Manuel, Denis Lawson (New Tricks) as Lawrence Dowdall, Shauna Macdonald (The Five) as Agnes Muncie, Joanna Roth (Endeavour) as Bridget Manuel and Gary Lewis (The Smoke) as William Watt.
In what is his screen-writing debut, Nick Stevens, who extensively researched the story, penned the scripts for Muncie, which is set as a co-production between World Productions and Finlaggan Films. Alan Nicol is the creative consultant, while Gillian McNeill is set as the producer. Simon Heath, Kirstie Macdonald and Richard McNeill are the executive producers. Line Of Duty helmer John Strickland is attached to direct.
“Muncie is a compelling three part series featuring a true crime story,” said ITV’s Controller of Drama Victoria Fea, who commissioned the series. “We’re delighted to be commissioning the mini-series from World Productions and Finlaggan Films, and to be working with Nick Stevens, whose scripts perfectly capture Manuel’s personal vendetta against the man who struggled to bring him to justice.”
This marks the latest commission that World Productions has secured from ITV, with the two having previously colloborated on such dramas as Dark Angel, starring Joanne Froggatt; and Code Of A Killer, starring John Simm and David Threlfall. Muncie is being supported by Creative Scotland’s Production Growth Fund. BBC Worldwide will handle global distribution.
