Amazon Prime Instant Video has struck a deal with Sony Pictures Television to acquire the UK rights to AMC’s upcoming comic book adaptation Preacher, TVWise has learned. The series will premiere on Amazon Prime on Monday May 23rd, with subsequent episodes being made available to Prime members within 24 hours of the U.S. broadcast on AMC.
Developed for television by Sam Catlin, Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg, Preacher tells the story of Jesse Custer, a conflicted Preacher in a small Texas town who merges with a creature that has escaped from heaven and develops the ability to make anyone do anything he says. Along with his ex-girlfriend, Tulip, and an Irish vampire named Cassidy, the three embark on a journey to literally find God.
The drama is produced by AMC Studios and Sony Pictures Television and stars Dominic Cooper (Fleming), Ruth Negga (Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Joseph Gilgun (Misfits), Lucy Griffiths (True Blood) and Ian Colletti (Rake). The executive producers are Sam Caitlin, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Ken Levin, Jason Netter, Neal Moritz, Vivian Cannon and Ori Marmur.
Amazon Prime Instant Video UK has established themselves as a key buyer of first run U.S. scripted dramas over the past few years. They started slowly down this path with the likes of Vikings and Black Sails, but have been getting more ambitious over the past 18 months. Preacher joins a roster of first run US dramas on the streaming service that includes the aforementioned Vikings and Black Sails, as well as Starz period drama Outlander and USA Network hacker drama Mr Robot.
“Preacher is one of the most ambitious and highly-anticipated new series of the year, and exactly the kind of show we want to bring our Prime members around the world,” stated Brad Beale, Vice President of Worldwide Television Acquisition for Amazon. “Sitting alongside shows like The Man in the High Castle, Transparent, Mr Robot, Fear The Walking Dead and the upcoming Clarkson, Hammond and May show, The Grand Tour, Preacher is another great addition to our line-up and we think our customers are going to love it.”
In addition to UK rights, Amazon Prime Instant Video’s deal with Sony Pictures Television also gives the streaming service exclusive rights to Preacher in Austria, Germany and Japan. The multi-territory deal is the latest licensing deal international distributor Sony Pictures Television has secured for the show; after selling Preacher to Viaplay across the Nordics, OSN across the Middle East and D-Smart in Turkey.
Sony Pictures Television will be showcasing Preacher at the upcoming LA Screenings and are expecting to close a number of deals for the show shortly thereafter. “We’ve had huge interest in this bold and intriguing comic book adaptation from international buyers, and Preacher will undoubtedly be one of the most talked about shows of the year”, said Paul Littmann, Sony Pictures Television’s Executive Vice-President of International Distribution. “We’re certain it will be a stand-out show for Amazon.”
