FXX has renewed comedy series You’re The Worst, starring Chris Geere and Aya Cash, for a third season, TVWise has learned. There’s no official word on the size of the pick-up, though TVWise understands that it will be for 13 episodes, matching the order for season two.

Created bv Stephen Falk, You’re The Worst tells the story of Gretchen and Jimmy, fear, heartbreak, romance, sex, food, Los Angeles, friendship, and the fact that sometimes the worst people make the best partners. The comedy series is produced by FX Productions and stars Chris Geere (The Spa), Aya Cash (The Wolf of Wall Street), Desmin Borges (The Good Wife) and Kether Donohue (The Carrie Diaries).

“You’re the Worst, already one of the most critically-acclaimed comedies on television, is also one of the most innovative, something Stephen and the cast will continue in the much-deserved third season”, said Nick Grad, President of Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Productions. “The daring turn this season, led by the honest and respectful portrayal of Gretchen’s depression, was a very courageous move for a comedy and another milestone for You’re the Worst.”

The renewal fits in with comments made by FX Networks CEO John Langraf at the most recent TCA Press Tour, when he said such decisions were made based on the best of three votes: one from network execs, one from the critics, and one from the viewers. While the series has fairly soft ratings (it’s hovering around 200K viewers), even by cable standards, it enjoys strong support internally at FX and is a hit with critics across the board.

You’re The Worst is only the second of FX Networks’ original comedy series to score renewals this season, as the network has been having something of a tough time with the genre. The network previously renewed Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll and cancelled both The Comedians and Married, the latter of which was the time-slot companion to You’re The Worst in its first season. It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia has already been renewed for next season under a previous multi-year pick-up.

In addition to picking up a third season of You’re The Worst, FX Networks has inked a multi-year overall deal with the series’ creator and showrunner Stephen Falk. The agreement, which is the writer/producer’s first overall deal, will see Falk write, develop and produce television projects for FX Networks and FX Productions. “Stephen is one of the best new talents in comedy – as funny, thoughtful and original as You’re the Worst and we can’t wait to see what he comes up with next,” added Nick Grad.
