Sonia Braga (Royal Pains) has been tapped for a series regular role in Netflix’s upcoming Marvel series Luke Cage, TVWise has learned.
Braga, who most recently had a starring role in the NBC pilot The Curse Of The Fuentes Women which did not go to series, will play Soledad Temple, Claire Temple’s (Rosario Dawson) mother.
“A character as strong as Claire needs an equally powerful mother, and with Sonia we found the perfect actress to deliver the stellar performance we needed,” said Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb. “In ‘Marvel’s Luke Cage,’ fans will now get a chance to see where Claire got the fire we love her for.”
Luke Cage will star Mike Colter (The Good Wife) as the eponymous superhero. The character will first appear in Netflix’s second Marvel series Jessica Jones, before seguing to Marvel’s Luke Cage as the series lead. During the course of an investigation in New York City, private investigator Jessica Jones encounters the enigmatic Luke Cage – a man whose past has secrets that will dramatically alter Jessica in ways she could never have imagined.
Sonia Braga is the latest actor to board Marvel’s Luke Cage, which is currently in production for a 2016 global premiere. In addition to Mike Colter, the cast also includes Alfre Woodard (State Of Affairs), Mahershala Ali (House Of Cards), Theo Rossi (Sons Of Anarchy) and Simone Missick (Ray Donovan). Rosario Dawson is also set to reprise her role as Claire Temple, which she first played on Daredevil.
Marvel’s Luke Cage is the third series to come out of Netflix’s bumper deal with Marvel for four television series (Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Marvel’s Luke Cage and Marvel’s Iron Fist) and a miniseries (Marvel’s The Defenders) tying the four together (in a similar vein to the Avengers films on feature side). The series is being produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television, with Cheo Hodari Coker set as the showrunner.
