Mongrels and Nanny McPhee alum Katy Brand has been tapped to play the lead in Winnie And Wilbur, Channel 5’s animated adaptation of the Winnie The Witch books by Valerie Thomas and Korky Paul, TVWise has learned.
Based on the long running book series which began in 1987 with the publication of Winnie The Witch, the animated series, which is working under the title Winnie And Wilbur, will follow Winnie, a wild, unpredictable and totally lovable witch and Wilbur, her cat and her long-suffering best friend who gets caught up in Winnie’s wonderfully wrong spells and their hair-raising consequences.
Katy Brand, who is coming off of a guest starring role on the BBC’s Mapp & Lucia adaptation, will lend her voice to the part of Winnie. “I am utterly delighted to be giving Winnie the Witch a voice and to help bring her to life”, she said in a statement. “She is funny, flighty and full of the joys of life; always up for an adventure and most importantly, a good laugh, which is why I, and so many others, love her.”
“We couldn’t have wished for a better person to play Winnie. Not only is Katy a fan of the books but she also embodies the happiness, optimism and adventurous spirit of the character”, added Jessica Symons, Head of Children’s at Channel 5. “Katy is going to be a brilliant Winnie and fans of the books as well as those new to the character will love her performance.”
Originally commissioned earlier this year with a 52 episode order, Winnie And Wilbur is being produced by Winduna Enterprises and it is targeted at 4-7 year olds. Winduna are utilising a unique 2D animation system to recreate the graphical style of Korky Paul’s illustrations for the TV adaptation. Production on the series is currently underway for a 2017 premiere on Channel 5’s kids strand Milkshake.
