BBC One has renewed critical and ratings hit Doctor Foster, starring Suranne Jones (Scott & Bailey), for a second season, TVWise has learned.
Doctor Foster tells the story of the Gemma Foster (Jones) whom is a trusted GP, the heart of her village and a woman people can trust. The first season followed Doctor Foster’s life as it was about to explode. When she suspects her husband has been having an affair, Doctor Foster is determined to find out the truth.
The drama series, which was originally commissioned back in 2014, was created by The Town scribe Mike Bartlett and is set up at The Honourable Woman indie Drama Republic. Across its five episodes, the series averaged a consolidated audience of 8.2 million viewers, making it the highest rated new TV drama of 2015. The finale, meanwhile, managed 10.1 million viewers.
“I am delighted to announce that there will be a second series of Doctor Foster”, said the BBC’s Controller of Drama Commissioning Poly Hill, who commissioned the second season alongside BBC One Controller Charlotte Moore. “Mike has not finished telling the story of Gemma and Simon and there will be many more surprises to come in the next chapter of this powerful drama.”
At present the only cast member confirmed to be returning for season two is Suranne Jones (the season one cast also included Bertie Carvel, Robert Pugh, Adam James and Jodie Comer), Series creator Mike Bartlett is returning to pen the scripts and will once again executive produce alongside Drama Republic’s Roanna Benn, Jude Liknaitzky, Mike Bartlett and Greg Brenman and the BBC’s Matthew Read.
“After discussions with Drama Republic and the wonderful Mike Bartlett I am thrilled to announce we will all be reunited to tell Gemma’s next chapter, and I can’t wait for the audience who invested in these characters to find out what explosive twists and turns Mike has in store”, Suranne Jones said in a statment. “Now we can look into what happens to a woman after divorce, when deceit and revenge have taken their toll. What a gift of a part and a dream to work with Mike again!”
“I’ve been astounded by the response to Doctor Foster. So I’m thrilled that alongside Drama Republic and the phenomenal Suranne Jones, we’re now going to tell the next chapter in Gemma’s story”, added Mike Bartlett. “Her life in Parminster may look better on the surface, but as she will discover to her cost, every action has its consequences eventually. No one comes through hell unscathed.”
