ABC has made a decision on the last of their Summer scripted series, opting not to pick up sci-fi thriller The Whispers for a second season, TVWise has learned.
From Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television, The Whispers is about an alien invasion and the race against the clock to defeat an unseen alien enemy out to destroy the world. The sci-fi series stars Lily Rabe, Barry Sloane, Derek Webster, Milo Ventimiglia, Kyle Harrison Breitkopf, Catalina Denis and Kylie Rogers. The executive producers are Steven Spielberg, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank and Dawn Olmstead.
The Whispers, which was originally developed for a midseason berth during the 2014-2015 season, was not a strong performer for ABC. The show opened to a decent 5.7 million viewers and a 1.5 A18-49 demo, but ratings dropped in subsequent weeks with the season (now series) finale managing a mere 2.75 million viewers and a 0.7 demo rating. Ratings aside, the writing had been on the wall for the series after ABC let the options on the cast lapse several months ago.
With today’s cancellation, ABC has decided on the fate of every one of their summer series. Mistresses has been renewed for a 13 episode fourth season, which will not feature Blue Bloods star Jennifer Esposito; while series producer eOne recently confirmed that Rookie Blue would not be returning for a seventh season. Limited series The Astronaut Wives Club was only envisioned as a “one-and-done” and as such will not return for a second season.
