ABC Family is pulling the plug on Chasing Life, opting to cancel the cancer drama after two seasons, TVWise has confirmed.
The decision not to bring the show back for a third season had not been unexpected given the ratings collapse during the show’s second season, which saw the audience drop by close to 50% by the time the season finale aired last week. That said, it was still a tough decision as ABC Family’s senior brass were known to be fans of the show.
Chasing Life follows twenty-something April, a smart and quick witted aspiring journalist. Just as things start to look up at work, home and on the romance front with co-worker Dominic, April gets the devastating news from an estranged uncle that she has cancer. The series is produced by BV Family Productions & Lionsgate in association with ABC Family and stars Italia Ricci, Mary Page Keller, Aisha Dee, Richard Brancatisano and Haley Ramm.
Notably, the cancellation comes as the network is looking to refresh their slate of original dramas and move away from the soapier fare they have become known for in recent years. To that end, the network is prepping a high-concept series titled Shadowhunters, which is based on Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments; and a comedy based on the life of Nicki Minaj which has the Grammy nominee attached as executive producer and star.
