Channel 5 has acquired the UK broadcast rights to MTV’s drama series Teen Wolf for their digi-net 5* after striking a deal with MGM Television, TVWise has learned. The show’s 12 episode first season will premiere on 5* on Tuesday October 27th at 9pm, with a double-bill.
Based on the feature film of the same name, Teen Wolf revolves around Scot McCall, a gifted high school athlete whose entire life changes when he is bitten by a werewolf. The drama series stars Tyler Posey, Crystal Reed, Dylan O’Brien, Tyler Hoechlin, Holland Roden and Colton Haynes.
Teen Wolf has previously aired in the UK on Sky Living, who aired the show’s first two seasons between 2011 and 2012. As TVWise revealed at the time, the Sky owned channel dropped the series in May 2013, just ahead of the LA Screenings, after execs decided resources were better spent on new content from the studios, rather than renewing their licensing deal with MGM.
The acquisition of Teen Wolf comes mere months after 5* picked up the exclusive rights to fellow MTV original series Eye Candy and is part of a concerted effort to increase the number of U.S. acquisitions on the channel, which is now focussed on a younger skewing audience. “For 5* we’re looking for younger-skewing content, so fun sexy, glossy, shows”, Channel 5’s Acquisitions and Channel Manager Marie-Claire Dunlop recently told TVWise.
