US premium cable network Starz has signed on to co-produce Close To The Enemy, BBC Two’s six episode drama series from Dancing On The Edge writer and director Stephen Poliakoff, TVWise has learned.
Close To The Enemy tells the story of intelligence officer Captain Callum Ferguson, whose last task for the Army is to ensure that a captured German scientist, Dieter, starts working for the British RAF on urgently developing the jet engine. With the background of the emerging Cold War, it is clear to all that it’s crucial for British national security that cutting-edge technology is made available to the armed forces as quickly as possible.
Jim Sturgess (One Day) leads the cast as Captain Callum Ferguson; August Diel (Inglourious Basterds) portrays German scientist Dieter; while rising star Freddie Highmore (Bates Motel) will play Victor, Callum’s younger brother. Charlotte Riley (Peaky Blinders), Phoebe Fox (Woman in Black 2), Robert Glenister (Hustle), Alfie Allen (Game Of Thrones), Charity Wakefield (Wolf Hall), Angela Bassett (American Horror Story), Lindsay Duncan (Birdman), and Alfred Molina (Love Is Strange) also star.
Stephen Poliakoff penned the scripts for the six episode drama, which was picked up to series by BBC Two back in March. Little Island Productions, Endor Productions and Playground Entertainment are producing in association with All3media International. The executive producers are Helen Flint, Colin Callender and Hilary Bevan Jones. In addition to penning the scripts, Poliakoff also directed the series.
“We are excited to team up with Little Island, Endor Productions, Playground Entertainment, all3media International and Stephen Poliakoff again as he brings this post-World War II thriller to life in a way our viewers will find extremely compelling,” said Carmi Zlotnik, Managing Director of Starz.
Close To The Enemy marks the latest tie-up between Starz and the BBC. Starz previously acquired Stephen Poliakoff’s previous BBC series Dancing On The Edge to air on their Encore channel; while the network also co-produces thriller series The Missing with BBC One. Close To The Enemy is expected to debut on BBC Two in the UK and Starz in the US in 2016.
