‘Fear The Walking Dead’ Series Premiere Shatters Ratings Records With 10.1 Million Viewers

Fear The Walking DeadAfter months of marketing the series, AMC’s The Walking Dead companion series Fear The Walking Dead opened with a bang on Sunday night.

The show’s six episode first season opened to a whopping 10.1 million viewers and some 6.3 million viewers in the coveted A18-49 demo. According to AMC, Fear The Walking Dead broke all previous records and presently ranks as the highest rated series premiere in cable history in total viewers and all key demos. Said record was previously held by a spin-off of another AMC hit series, Better Call Saul. It’s worth noting that Fear significantly outrated the series premiere for The Walking Dead, which, back in 2010, drew in 5.35 million viewers and a 2.7 A18-49 demo rating.

“Thank you and congratulations to Robert Kirkman, Dave Erickson, the brilliant executive producers and the entire cast and crew of ‘Fear the Walking Dead,’” said AMC President Charlie Collier. “It is increasingly difficult to evaluate a show’s success on night one. However, we are releasing these live/same day ratings because ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ delivered record-breaking numbers that are all the more special in this era of time-shifted viewing and audience fragmentation. To have a companion series to the #1 show on television driving communal, urgent viewing, social activity and pop cultural relevance of this magnitude is truly differentiating. Of course none of it is possible without the fans, whose passion leads to these remarkable results.”

Fear The Walking Dead is described “a gritty drama living in the same universe as The Walking Dead” that explores the onset of the undead apocalypse through the lens of a fractured family. Set in a city where people come to escape, shield secrets, and bury their pasts, a mysterious outbreak threatens to disrupt what little stability high school guidance counselor Madison Clark and English teacher Travis Manawa have managed to assemble. The everyday pressure of blending two families while dealing with resentful, escapist, and strung out children takes a back seat when society begins to break down. A forced evolution, a necessary survival of the fittest takes hold, and our dysfunctional family must either reinvent themselves or embrace their darker histories.

The companion series to TWD was created by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman & Dave Erickson and stars Kim Dickens as Madison, Cliff Curtis as Travis, Frank Dillane as Nick, Alycia Debnam-Carey as Alicia, Elizabeth Rodriguez as Liza, Ruben Blades as Daniel, Mercedes Mason as Ofelia and Lorenzo James Henrie as Chris.. AMC Studios is producing, with Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero, David Alpert and Dave Erickson will also serving as an executive producers. AMC has already renewed Fear The Walking Dead for a fifteen episode second season, which will air in two parts in 2016.

Fear The Walking Dead premieres in the UK on the soon to launch AMC UK on Monday August 31st at 9pm. Amazon Prime Instant Video UK also recently acquired streaming right to the show and will make it available to Prime subscribers in 2016, following the first window broadcast on AMC UK.

I disliked ‘The Walking Dead’ but viewed ‘Fear The Walking Dead’ out of curiosity, in some ways it is showing what was missing within The Walking Dead story, a true beginning rather than a dash to the end. The shows main curiosity will be the knowledge that the suffering has only just begun, hopefully some of the unexplained will be better explained but I wouldn’t hold my breath. I’m pleased to see NZ’er Cliff Curtis he’s good value as an actor
