Sense8 star Alfonso Herrera has been set as the male lead in Fox’s hour-long drama pilot Urban Cowboy, a reboot of the 1980s John Travolta feature film of the same name which hails from Paramount Television, 20th Century Fox Television and Craig Brewer.
Fox’s reboot of Urban Cowboy is described as “music fuelled” drama which follows Kyle and Gaby, two star-crossed young lovers, as they pursue their dreams and passions through the sweat of line-dancing in honky-tonks, the grime of the oil refineries, and the glamour of modern Texas. It’s about family legacies, starting over, finding true love, and the American dream.
According to Deadline, who first reported the casting, Herrera will play Kyle, a new take on the character played by John Travolta in the film. Kyle is a rodeo circuit rider who is forced to flee Mexico after ticking off the wrong people. Now, with a price on his head, he and his sister make their way to Houston, where they are given sanctuary by Uncle Al, an illegal immigrant who has made a life for himself in the United States.
Urban Cowboy is set up as a co-production by the recently launched Paramount Television and Fox’s sister studio 20th Century Fox Television. Craig Brewer is attached to write, direct and executive produce the pilot. Robert Evans, Sue Naegle and Chris Levinson also serve as executive producers on Urban Cowboy, which is the first drama to land a pilot order at Fox this development cycle. The pilot is set to commence filming later this year, with Fox said to be eyeing a pick-up for midseason.
