MTV has renewed Scream – the scripted drama series based on the feature film franchise – for a second season, the network announced on Wednesday during their executive panel at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour.
Scream: The Series picks up after a cyber-bullying incident results in a brutal murder. The shocking violence stirs up memories of a killing spree from the past that has haunted some, intrigued others and maybe just inspired a new killer. A group of teens – with two old friends struggling to reconnect at its heart – become lovers, enemies, suspects, targets and victims of a killer who’s out for blood. The drama series is produced by Dimension TV and stars Willa Fitzgerald, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Carlson Young, Amadeus Serafini, John Karna, Connor Weil, Tracy Middendorf and Jason Wiles.
Since debuting on MTV on June 30th, Scream has been a decent performer, bringing in an audience of more than one million viewers. The series has also been a big DVR gainer averaging 60% increases in L+3 over L+SD ratings week to week and it has also generated some 7.9 million streams across multiple platforms. “It has been a wonderful experience working with Bob Weinstein and his team who are such connoisseurs of this genre and we are thrilled by how our viewers have responded to the reinvention of Scream”. said MTV’s Mina Lefevre. “We look forward to another season filled with suspense, horror and more twists and turns.”
“We couldn’t be happier ‘Scream’ has been renewed for a second season and that we have a wonderful working relationship with Doug Herzog, Stephen Friedman, Susanne Daniels, Mina Lefevre and her team,” said Bob Weinstein, Co-Chairman of The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films. “The ‘Scream’ franchise has been such a huge part of our history and to watch it evolve, find a new generation of fans and succeed at MTV makes this all the more sweet. We promise even more scares, surprises, romance and of course kills in season two.”
