And the official title for the next Star Trek feature film is…. Star Trek Beyond.
Helmer Justin Lin revealed the news on Twitter, confirming reports that had been circulating since April (beginning with TrekMovie) that Beyond would be the title for the new film, which just entered production in Vancouver. Beyond is scheduled for release in thaters on July 8th 2016, marking the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise.
As is always the way, the studio has been more or less silent on the new Trek film, with no casting or plot details having been officially confirmed. As TVWise previously reported, the entire core cast of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, John Cho and Simon Pegg are returning (with pay rises to boot); while Idris Elba is understood to have been cast as the villain. Additionally, Pine and Quinto have already signed on for a fourth film.
Star Trek Beyond has had its fair share of development headaches and there was some concern as to whether or not it would enter production in time for its scheduled release date. JJ Abrams, who was behind the first two films Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, bowed out due to commitments to the new Star Wars film. That led to Roberto Orci, who helped pen the first two films, being set as writer and director.
It was after several drafts of a script that execs at Paramount Pictures felt that things were not coming together as they hoped and Orci stepped down (though he is still a producer alongside Abrams), with the studio beginning a short search for new writers and a director. They found that director in Fast & Furious helmer Justin Lin, who has been a life-long Trekkie; while cast member Simon Pegg and Doug Jung took over as writers, throwing out the previous script and starting anew.
In addition to confirming the official title of the new movie, Lin’s tweet also gave the first glimpse of Star Trek Beyond with an image of a new Starfleet uniform. Check it out below:
