Channel 5 has closed a deal to acquire the free-to-air rights to A Deadly Adoption, Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig’s two-hour TV movie which debuted on the US Lifetime network last weekend. A Deadly Adoption will premiere on Channel 5 on Sunday July 5th at 10pm.
Described as something of a campy parody of Lifetime TV movies, A Deadly Adoption is “based on a true story” and follows a successful couple who house and care for a pregnant woman during the final months of her pregnancy with the hopes of adopting her unborn child. The drama is produced by Mar Vista Entertainment & National Picture Shows and stars Will Ferrell (The Spoils Of Babylon), Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) and Jessica Lowndes (90210). Rachel Lee Goldenberg directs from a script written by Andrew Steele. The executive producers are Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Sharon Bordas, Fernando Szew, Andrew Steele and Jessica Elbaum.
The project, which is being produced for the US Lifetime network to mark the 25th Anniversary of their move into original TV movies, has been shrouded in secrecy from day one. It was only after production had wrapped a couple of months ago that word of the TV movie leaked out in The Hollywood Reporter, with the other trades subsequently confirming the initial report. Ferrell’s production company, in an attempt to quell the firestorm of press, issued a statement claiming the movie had been pulled. Lifetime finally broke their silence on A Deadly Adoption earlier this month when they announced the premiere date.
This marks the second such licensing deal that international distributor Mar Vista Entertainment has struck with a UK broadcaster for A Deadly Adoption. As TVWise previously reported, Lifetime UK has also snapped up the pay-TV movies to the two-hour TV movie, with plans to air A Deadly Adoption this August in their Thursday night 9pm “Lifetime Original Movies” time-slot.
