Fresh off of a starring role on HBO’s True Detective, Adria Arjona has been cast as the lead in NBC’s 10 episode Wizard of Oz limited series Emerald City. She will play Dorothy gale, a head-strong 20 year old who is unwittingly sent to the mystical land of Oz.
Emerald City follows 20-year-old Dorothy Gale (Arjona) and her K9 police dog who are transported to another world, one far removed from our own — a mystical land of competing kingdoms, lethal warriors, dark magic and a bloody battle for supremacy. This is the fabled Land of Oz in a way you’ve never seen before, where wicked witches don’t stay dead for long and a young girl becomes a headstrong warrior who holds the fate of kingdoms in her hands.
Adria Arjona, who also recently starred in TNT’s Drug Trade Drama Pilot and CBS’ Person Of Interest, is the first to be cast in Emerald City since the project was revived in April. NBC originally ordered the series from Universal Television in 2013 with Josh Friedman serving as the writer, executive producer and showrunner, but they opted to cancel that iteration of the project in August 2014 over creative differences with Friedman.
This new take on Emerald City – which includes numerous creative changes, most notably the addition of Dorothy’s K9 police dog – is once again set up at NBC’s sister studio Universal television and is being shepherded by David Schulner, who replaces Josh Friedman as writer and EP. Siberia‘s Matt Arnold will pen the scripts alongside David Schulner. Shaun Cassidy also serves as executive producer on the series.
