Mere weeks after the show kicked off its first season, Netflix has renewed their Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin fronted comedy series Grace & Frankie for a 13 episode second season. Production gets underway later this year for a 2016 premiere.
Created by Marta Kaufman, Howard J. Morris & Paula Weinstein, Grace & Frankie focuses on nemeses Grace (Fonda) and Frankie (Tomlin) who find their lives both turned upside down and – to their dismay – permanently intertwined when their husbands (Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) announce they are in love with each other and plan to get married. The Skydance Productions produced comedy also stars Brooklyn Decker, Ethan Embry, Baron Vaughn and June Diane Raphael.
It was series co-creator Marta Kaufman who revealed that the show had been picked up for a second season at an event at the Pacific Design Centre. “It’s so awesome to do a show on Netflix, because two and a half weeks after we launched, Miley Cyrus does a tweet about your show, and they call and say, ‘We’d like to do a Season 2′”, she said. “So yes, there is a season two. We have Ted [Sarandos, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer] and Miley [Cyrus] to thank.”
With the renewal, Netflix’s record remains intact with each and every one of the streaming giant’s original series having made it to a second season. Other recent Netflix series to have been renewed for a second season include Marco Polo and Marvel’s Daredevil. The streaming giant is also understood to be on the verge of picking up a second season of Sense8, their sci-fi series from The Wachowskis and J. Michael Straczynski which debuts on June 5th.
