In what may well be their final pick ups this pilot season, NBC has handed out series orders to sniper drama The Player, starring Strike Back‘s Phillip Winchester; and Game Of Silence, an adaptation of Turkish thriller Suskunlar.
The Player tells the story of former FBI agent Alex Kane who becomes a reluctant player in an age-old secret society’s perverse game of chance, where the stakes are measured in criminal acts and human lives. Made up of the world’s wealthiest, members of this anonymous, amoral club place their bets through The House to gamble on the probable outcomes of horrific crimes.
The thriller series, which was developed under the title Endgame, hails from The Librarians creator John Rogers, who penned the script and executive produces alongside John Davis and John Fox. The Player is produced by Kung Fu Monkey and Davis Entertainment in association with Sony Pictures Television and stars Philip Winchester as (Strike Back), Charity Wakefield (The Raven), Damon Gupton (Empire) and Wesley Snipes (Blade).
Based on a Turkish format, Game Of Silence tells the story of four friends whose lives were changed irrevocably when they spent nine months in a hellish juvenile detention camp in 1988 after an ordinary teenage transgression went awry. Twenty-five years later, they learn that the people who brutalized them have forged a corrupt alliance that straddles both sides of the law. Now, these friends face an uneasy reunion as they seek long-delayed justice –and risk unleashing a hornet’s nest of violence, retribution and secrets.
Game Of Silence was one of the hottest titles from this past development cycle, originally landed a hefty put pilot commitment in September 2014 and a traditional pilot order this past January. Parenthood scribe David Hudgins penned the script for the drama, which is set up at Sony Pictures Television and Carol Mendelsohn Productions. The cast includes David Lyons, Michael Raymond-James, Larenz Tate, Derek Phillips, Bre Blair, Demetrius Grosse, Conor O’ Farrell, Deidrie Henry and Claire van der Boom.
The series order for The Player ensures that both of the leads (Phillip Winchester and Sullivan Stapleton) of the Sky1/Cinemax co-production Strike Back – which begins airing its final season this Summer – are now set to star in drama series for NBC. The network previously picked up Sullivan Stapleton starrer Blindpsot, which follows a woman covered in tattoos who wakes up naked in Times Square, suffering from amnesia, who soon leads the FBI to a large conspiracy.
