ABC Family’s Shadowhunters series has found its villain. Alan Van Sprang has boarded the series in the recurring role of Valentine, a mysterious Shadowhunter wielding immense power who, on his path to seek out what he wants, will execute anyone in his way, never thinking twice about it.
Shadowhunters follows 18-year-old Clary Fray, who finds out on her birthday that she is not who she thinks she is but rather comes from a long line of Shadowhunters – human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. When her mother Jocelyn is kidnapped, Clary is thrown into the world of demon hunting with mysterious Shadowhunter Jace and her best friend, Simon.
Alan Van Sprang is no stranger to genre television. Notably, the Canadian actor, who most recently had an arc on The CW’s period drama Reign, also starred as Howlyn on the final season of Earth: Final Conflict between 2001 and 2002. Some of his more recent TV credits include The Tudors, King, The LA Complex and Marc Cherry’s CW pilot Cheerleader Death Squad, which did not go to series.
He is the latest actor to officially board Shadowhunters since the project landed at ABC Family back in March with a 10 episode straight-to-series order. Other cast members include Katherine McNamara as Clary Fray, Dominic Sherwood as Jace Wayland, Alberto Rosende as Simon, Emeraude Toubia as Isabelle Lightwood, Matthew Daddario as Alec Lightwood and Isaiah Mustafa as Luke Garroway.
Shadowhunters, which is based on Cassandra Clare’s YA novel series The Mortal Instruments, is set up a Constantin Film. The German production company has been attempting to get a TV adaptation of the novel series off the ground since last October, after feature film adaptation The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones flopped at the box office. Ed Decter and McG serve as the executive producers on the series. Decter is also the showrunner, while McG will direct the pilot.
