EXCLUSIVE: Lifetime UK has acquired the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to drama series UnREAL after striking a deal with A+E Studios International. The 10 episode scripted drama, which is produced for the US Lifetime network, will premiere on Lifetime UK this Summer.
UnREAL is set against the backdrop of the hit dating competition show Everlasting, UnREAL is led by flawed heroine Rachel Goldberg, a young producer whose sole job is to manipulate her relationships with and among the contestants to get the vital dramatic and outrageous footage that the program’s dispassionate executive producer, Quinn King, demands. What ensues is an eye-opening look at what happens in the outrageous world of unscripted television, where being a contestant can be vicious and producing it is a whole other reality
Buffy The Vampire Slayer scribe Marti Noxon, who most recently developed Bravo’s first original drama Girlfriend’s Guide To Divorce, co-created UnREAL alongside Sarah Gertrude Shapiro. The series stars Shiri Appleby (Girls), Megyn Price (Rules of Engagement), Freddie Stroma (Pitch Perfect), Josh Kelly (One Life To Live), Nathalie Kelley (The Fast and the Furious), Johanna Braddy (Shameless), Breeda Wool (Betas), Ashley Scott (Jericho) and Arielle Kebbel (The Vampire Diaries).
UnREAL has the distinction of being the first Lifetime original series to be wholly funded and developed through parent company A+E Networks’ in-house production banner A+E Studios, with the network having previously relied on the Hollywood majors (WB, CBS, Disney, Fox, Sony and NBCU) for their original scripted output.
Lifetime UK’s pick up of UnREAL fits in with the general acquisitions strategy of the channel, namely to mirror the output of their US cousin as much as possible, while cherry picking dramas from other studios/networks where appropriate. Said acquisitions strategy previously saw the A+E Networks UK backed channel acquire such Lifetime original series as Witches Of East End and The Client List, the AETN mini Bonnie & Clyde and NBC’s Rosemary’s Baby.
This also represents the latest deal that Lifetime UK’s parent A+E Networks UK has struck with sister company A+E Studios International in the past 24 hours. Just yesterday, TVWise reported that the two companies had agreed a deal for the exclusive rights to scripted mini-series Sons Of Liberty, starring Breaking Bad alum Dean Norris, which will air on History UK this June.
