Anna Maxwell Martin (The Bletchley Circle) and David Threlfall (Code of a Killer) has been set as the co-leads in ITV Encore’s three-part original drama Midwinter Of The Spirit.
Midwinter Of The Spirit follows country vicar Merrily Watkins, who just happens to be one of the few women priests working as an exorcist. When a man is found murdered by crucifixion, the police, aware of her knowledge of the paranormal underworld, turn to the Vicar for assistance. Before long Merilly is convinced Satanists are behind the crime and the investigation takes them into a very dark and dangerous world.
Anna Maxwell Martin will take on the series lead role of Vicar Merrily Watkins, while David Threlfall will play Reverend Huw Owen, a deliverance ministry tutor and Merrily’s mentor. The duo lead a cast which also includes Siobhan Finneran (Benidorm), Ben Bailey Smith (Law & Order: UK), Leila Mimmack (Home Fires), Kate Dickie (Game of Thrones), Simon Trinder (Without You), Oengus MacNamara (What If) and David Sterne (Hunted).
The first original drama commission for ITV Encore, Midwinter Of The Spirit is based on the series of Merrily Watkins novels by Phil Rickman (which began with The Wine of Angels in 1998) and is being penned by BAFTA winning screenwriter Stephen Volk. ITV Studios is producing, with Phil Collinson on board as the series producer, and ITV Studios’ Kieran Roberts serving as executive producer.
Whitechapel helmer Richard Clark has come on-board to direct the drama, which is set to enter production later this month in Hereford. “We’re very excited to be going into production on Midwinter of the Spirit, especially with such an amazing cast”, said executive producer Kieran Roberts. “We’re also thrilled that Stephen Volk’s superb adaptation of Phil Rickman’s gripping and chilling novel is one of the first original commissions for ITV Encore.”
