Amazon Prime Instant Video Picks Up UK Rights To ‘Extant’ Season 2, Sets July Premiere

Extant (FT)

Amazon Prime Instant Video UK has picked up the exclusive first run UK broadcast rights to the second season of CBS’ Halle Berry fronted sci-fi series Extant after striking a deal with CBS Studios International. The show’s second season will premiere on the streaming service on July 2nd, mere hours after its debut state-side. New episodes will then continue to be made available every Thursday.

From Mickey Fisher and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin TV, Extant follows Molly Woods, an astronaut trying to reconnect with her family when she returns after a year in outer space and discovers that she has been impregnated by an alien life-form. The show’s 13 episode second is poised to be one of change with the series away Molly’s (Halle Berry) work at the ISEA and focus on the search for her alien son who is threatening the human race.

Michael O'Neill-Hiroyuki Sanada Exit ExtantAs part of that change in direction there have been several casting changes. Season one regulars Michael O’Neill (The West Wing) and Hiroyuki Sanada (Helix) have exited the show, while Goran Visnjic and Camryn Manheim have been downgraded to recurring. Returning regulars include Halle Berry, Pierce Gagnon, and Grace Gummer. New cast additions include Jeffrey Dean Morgan, David Morrissey, Lyndon Smith, Nacar Zadegan and Melina Kanakaredes.

Amazon had long been expected to pick up the second season of Extant, after the first season broke viewership records for Amazon Prime Instant Video UK when it premiered last July. “Last Summer Extant broke records on Amazon Prime Instant Video, quickly becoming the most watched premiere in our history”, said Jay Marine, Vice President of Amazon Prime Instant Video EU. “We’re delighted to be able to bring the next installment of this star-studded suspense thriller exclusively to Prime members in the UK.”
