Rose Leslie (Game Of Thrones), Laura Haddock (Da Vinci’s Demons), Darren Boyd (Fortitude), John Heffernan (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell) and Patrick Malahide (Indian Summers) have signed on for co-starring roles in BBC One’s recently ordered two-part Luther special, TVWise has learned.
The Luther special sees Detective Chief Investigator John Luther (Idris Elba) pitted against his most chilling adversary yet. Haunted by the ghosts of his past and hell-bent on retribution, he’s drawn into a terrifyingly complex case that pushes him closer to the edge than he’s ever been.
“It’s great we’ve been able to do this Luther special. John is so close to my heart, he’s part of me”, said Elba. “The fans won’t be disappointed with his return – it’s explosive and definitely goes up a gear!” In addition to Idris Elba returning as Luther, Michael Smiley and Dermot Crowley are reprising their roles as Benny Silver and DSU Martin Schenk, respectively.
Luther creator Neil Cross is penning the script for the special, which is being produced by BBC In-House Drama Production in association with BBC America. Marcus Wilson is set as the producer, while Elizabeth Kilgarriff will executive produce. Fortitude helmer Sam Miller is attached to direct.
The two-part drama was commissioned by BBC One Controller Charlotte Moore and the BBC’s Controller of Drama Commissioning Ben Stephenson late last year, shortly after it was revealed that a US remake is in the works at Fox. Production is now underway in London, with BBC One eyeing an Autumn premiere.
